The Meaning of the Two Dimples in the Lower Back

Posted on March 5, 2026 By Adeline No Comments on The Meaning of the Two Dimples in the Lower Back

Many people notice two small dimples on the lower back, just above the buttocks. These are commonly called “back dimples” or “Dimples of Venus.” While they may look like a special body feature, they actually have a simple explanation related to anatomy and genetics.

1. They Are a Natural Body Feature

These dimples occur where the skin is attached directly to the pelvic bone by a short ligament. Because of this connection, small indentations appear on the lower back.

2. They Are Mostly Genetic

Whether someone has these dimples is mostly determined by genetics. If your parents have them, there is a higher chance you may have them too.

3. They Are Often Linked to Body Structure

Back dimples are usually easier to see in people who have less fat in the lower back area. However, having them does not necessarily mean someone is thinner or healthier—it’s simply how their body is shaped.

4. Sometimes Called “Dimples of Venus” or “Dimples of Apollo”

In women, they are often called Dimples of Venus.

In men, they are sometimes called Dimples of Apollo.

These names come from classical art and mythology where these dimples were considered a sign of beauty and attractiveness.

5. They Usually Have No Medical Significance

In most cases, these dimples are completely harmless and do not indicate any health condition. They are simply a normal variation in human anatomy.

✅ In short: If you have two dimples in your lower back, it’s just a natural physical trait—something many people consider unique and attractive.
