Posted on April 11, 2026 By Adeline No Comments on ⚠️ Lines on Your Nails: What Do They Really Mean?

Those mysterious lines on your nails can look alarming—but they don’t automatically mean something serious like “cancer.” In fact, most causes are harmless or easily treatable.

🟤 1. Vertical Lines (Most Common)

Run from cuticle to tip

Very common with aging

Usually harmless and natural

⚪ 2. Horizontal Lines (Beau’s Lines)

Deep grooves across the nail

Can appear after:

Severe illness

High fever

Physical stress or injury

Known as Beau’s lines

⚫ 3. Dark Lines (Important to Check!)

A dark brown or black line under the nail

Could be harmless pigmentation (called Longitudinal melanonychia)

⚠️ Rarely, it may signal Melanoma (a serious skin cancer)

👉 Especially concerning if:

The line is getting wider

Has irregular borders

Extends to the surrounding skin

🟡 4. White Lines or Spots

Usually due to minor nail injury

Known as Leukonychia

Not typically from calcium deficiency (common myth)

🚨 When Should You Worry?

See a doctor if you notice:

A dark line that changes quickly

Pain, bleeding, or nail deformity

Lines appearing suddenly with other symptoms
