If you notice purple or bluish veins on your legs, it usually means you may have spider veins or varicose veins. These are very common and usually not dangerous, but they can sometimes indicate circulation issues.

What These Purple Veins Usually Mean

1. Spider Veins

Small purple, red, or blue veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They often look like a spider web.

2. Varicose Veins

Larger veins that become swollen and twisted. They can appear blue or purple and may bulge from the skin.

Common Causes

Purple veins can appear because of:

Aging

Possible Symptoms

Sometimes they cause no symptoms, but some people may experience:

Leg aching or heaviness

Burning or throbbing

Swelling in the legs

Itching around the veins

Leg cramps at night

When to See a Doctor

You should consult a doctor if you notice:

Sudden swelling or severe pain

Skin discoloration or sores

Bleeding veins

Rapidly worsening veins

Simple Ways to Reduce Them
