How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains from Laundry

Posted on March 13, 2026 By Adeline No Comments on How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains from Laundry

Grease stains from cooking oil, butter, or food can be stubborn—especially if they’ve already been washed and dried. The heat from the dryer often sets the oil deeper into the fabric, but you can still remove many of these stains with the right method.

Method 1: Dish Soap (Best for Oil and Cooking Grease)

Dish soap is designed to break down grease, which makes it one of the most effective solutions.

Steps

Lay the clothing flat and locate the grease spot.

Apply a few drops of liquid dish soap directly onto the stain.

Gently rub the fabric together or use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush).

Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.

Rinse with warm water.

Wash the garment normally in the washing machine.

✅ Repeat if the stain is still visible before drying.

Method 2: Baking Soda + Dish Soap

This works well for older, dried grease stains.

Steps

Sprinkle baking soda over the grease stain.

Add a few drops of dish soap on top.

Use a toothbrush to scrub gently.

Leave it for 30 minutes.

Rinse and wash normally.

Baking soda helps absorb oil trapped in the fibers.

Method 3: White Vinegar Treatment

White vinegar can help break down leftover grease residue.

Steps

Mix 1 part white vinegar with 1 part warm water.

Apply the mixture to the stain.

Let it sit for 10 minutes.

Wash as usual.

Important Tips

✔ Do not dry the clothing until the stain is completely gone. Heat can make it permanent.

✔ Use warm or hot water if the fabric allows it.

✔ For delicate fabrics, test the solution on a hidden area first.

For very stubborn grease stains, apply dish soap + baking soda and leave it overnight before washing.
