Posted on April 20, 2026 By Adeline No Comments on Nail Lines After 40: What They Really Mean (And When to Worry)

Here’s what those lines can actually mean:

Vertical Lines (most common)

These run from the cuticle to the tip.

Very common after 40

Usually harmless

Caused by aging, mild dehydration, or reduced nail oil

Similar to wrinkles on skin

👉 In most cases, no treatment is needed

Horizontal Lines (Beau’s lines)

These go across the nail.

Can appear after illness, high fever, or stress

Sometimes linked to conditions like diabetes or infections

May also happen after injury to the nail

👉 If deep or appearing on many nails at once, it’s worth checking with a doctor

White Lines or Spots

Often due to minor injury (even unnoticed)

Not usually a calcium deficiency (common myth)

Typically harmless

When to Pay Attention

See a doctor if you notice:

Sudden changes in nail color (dark, yellow, or blue)

Thickening, splitting, or pain

Lines with fatigue, weight loss, or other symptoms
