🌱 How to Grow Clove Plant at Home – From Seed to Spice

Posted on April 13, 2026 By Adeline No Comments on 🌱 How to Grow Clove Plant at Home – From Seed to Spice

🌿 What is Clove?

Clove comes from the dried flower buds of the tropical tree Syzygium aromaticum. Growing it at home is possible—but it requires patience and the right climate.

🌰 Step 1: Get Fresh Clove Seeds

Use fresh, unprocessed cloves (they must still be viable seeds—not dried spice from stores).

Seeds should be plump and moist, not brittle.

👉 Tip: Clove seeds lose viability quickly, so plant them ASAP.

🪴 Step 2: Prepare the Soil & Pot

Use a mix of:

Rich loamy soil

Compost

Sand (for drainage)

Ensure the pot has good drainage holes.

🌱 Step 3: Planting the Seeds

Sow seeds 1 inch deep in moist soil

Keep spacing if planting multiple seeds

Water lightly after planting

☀️ Step 4: Ideal Growing Conditions

Clove trees love tropical conditions:

🌡️ Temperature: 20–30°C

💧 Humidity: High (60–80%)

☀️ Light: Bright but indirect sunlight

🚫 Avoid cold or dry winds

👉 In Pakistan, keep indoors or in a shaded balcony if climate is harsh.

💧 Step 5: Watering & Care

Keep soil consistently moist (not soggy)

Mist leaves to maintain humidity

Add organic fertilizer every 4–6 weeks

🌳 Step 6: Transplanting & Growth

When the plant grows 20–30 cm, move it to a bigger pot

Clove trees grow slowly and need space over time

🌸 Step 7: From Flower to Spice

The tree starts flowering after 5–8 years

Harvest buds when they turn pink (before opening)

Dry them in the sun → they become the cloves you use!

⏳ Important Reality Check

Clove trees take years to produce spice

They grow best in humid tropical climates

Indoor growing = possible, but fruiting is harder

🌟 Bonus Tips

Use a humidifier if growing indoors

Protect from frost at all costs

Be patient—this is a long-term plant 🌳
